Dos and Don’ts Honeycomb Wrap Users Should Keep in Mind

Honeycomb packaging has emerged as the latest and most highly beneficial packaging solution in the protective packaging industry. Being a highly sustainable and eco-friendly packaging solution, this paper kraft honeycomb-designed packaging solution is the perfect alternative to single use plastic bubble wrapping.

Over the years, bubble wrapping has been considered the primary solution for the packaging industry, but it’s made of plastic that is slowly and surely killing our ecosystem. So, in accounting for the environmental factor, businesses and consumers have started switching to this revolutionary packaging material.

Honeycomb paper wrapping creates a unique 3D hexa shape which gives a very strong cushion to goods and prevents them from getting damaged during shipment. However, since this is still a growing category and a new product, we have often noticed that consumers and packers are not using this paper bubble wrap effectively. Therefore, despite its phenomenal product, they don’t realize all its benefits.

To help solve this, this article briefs about honeycomb paper wrapping solution and its benefits along with our packaging expert’s tips on do’s and don’ts of using hexa paper bubble packaging in detail.

What is Honeycomb Packaging?

Before getting into the core of ‘how to use honeycomb paper’, let’s get some basic understanding about this packaging and how it works.

Honeycomb packaging is a kraft-paper-based, environment-friendly, and cost-effective packaging solution for protective wrapping requirements. When compared with all other existing packaging solutions, this honeycomb kraft paper wrap provides various benefits including superior strength and protection, compact storage space, faster packing, and a pleasant customer unboxing experience.

The honeycomb kraft paper when stretched forms a 3D honeycomb pattern which resembles the inside of a beehive. The individual bands of the kraft paper are connected in a series of continuous hexagonal cell structures. This forms an extremely strong structure and provides a high level of protection to the item by providing a bouncy cushion for absorbing shocks when it is tightly wrapped over the items. Because of this cushion, packed items undergo safe transit when wrapped correctly.

Do’s and Don’ts of Honeycomb Wraps for Proper Protection

are a relatively new packaging solution introduced in the market, and hence the information around its benefits is very limited. We wish to resolve this by spreading awareness and education on eco cushion paper, its advantages and the best way to use it to ensure maximum protection and minimum damages.

This section briefs how to use this cushion paper also known as honeycomb paper wraps for availing proper protection to safely transit goods.

Stretch, stretch, and stretch

People often wrap the item with honeycomb kraft paper wraps as flat paper over the packaging item. This won’t protect the items during transit, as the paper wrap fails to offer a cushion effect when it is not stretched fully.

For proper protection, you need to stretch the paper bubble wrap so that it will give you enough cushioning with its 3D honeycomb (hexagonal) structure. Always stretch the paper wrap until you see a complete hexagonal structure on it.

Use extra layers for fragiles

Often people wrap fragiles (glass or ceramic items or any other breakable items) with a single-layered honeycomb paper sheet. By doing so, you won’t get proper protection for your fragile product, therefore increasing the chances of the product getting damaged

While wrapping a fragile it is highly recommended to go for extra layers. Just like bubble wrapping, adding 3 to 4 extra layers around the fragile will play a huge role in minimizing the damage while shipment.

Do not press/ compress the wrapped product (i.e. let the cushion be intact)

Often we have noticed that packers end up pressing a nicely wrapped product in order to test the cushion. This is like popping the bubbles of plastic bubble wrap after packing an item.

Once the product is wrapped with the stretched paper bubble and you can clearly see the beehive/ hexa pattern, place the product in the final pouch or box without compressing it. This ensures that the cushion is staying intact and will keep your products protected in transit.

Ensure no empty spaces in the final box before shipping – Use compact boxes or void fillers

Most damages in e-commerce transit can be attributed to courier handling. However, since that is not in our control, it is important to focus on the part which is in our control, i.e. protective packaging. We noticed many brands that leave empty spaces in the corrugated box or the pouch after placing the wrapped product inside. This empty space leads to the product crashing into the box and causing damages

We strongly recommend filling the empty space of the corrugated box or pouch used for packaging with void fillers. This will give an external cushioning to the packed items, therefore securing them in the box/ pouch and preventing them from getting damaged during shipping. Alternatively, you can also choose a correct sized box that fits your wrapped product well or simply wrap the product with honeycomb kraft paper wrap with a few extra layers.

Let’s Wrap It Up:

Honeycomb kraft paper wrap packaging solution would be more sustainable if it is handled properly. This eco-friendly packaging solution has a huge role in various applications of the packaging industry because of its high durability, light weight, and eco-friendly nature.

Follow the above-mentioned do’s and don’ts to leverage the full potential of honeycomb packaging and reduce your carbon footprint.
